Account book, 1854-1862.

This account book contains records of B. Stuart and Sons, as well as B. and J. H. Stuart from 1854 to 1862. The Stuarts ran a general store in addition to their chair production. Included are accounts for sales of general merchandise (i.e., farm and dairy products, tobacco, cloth goods, coffee, oil, etc.). There are also records for farm labor exchanges and horse, carriage, plow, and oxen loans. Accounts concerning chair production include wages, hiring and firing of employees and the purchase of chair-building materials (wood).

Benjamin Stuart ( - ) and his son, Joseph Mirick (1815- ), were from Sterling, Mass. They commenced producing chairs in East Princeton, Mass. in the 1840s and later took John H. Stuart ( - ) into partnership, operating as B. Stuart and Sons. Joseph later moved to New York City and the East Princeton firm became B. and J. H. Stuart.
